Volunteering
Volunteering with u3a is a fantastic way to contribute to a vibrant community of lifelong learners—and there are many ways to get involved depending on your interests, skills, and availability.
Here’s how you can get involved:
You can usually start by speaking to a committee member in your local branch. They’ll guide you to roles that match your interests and availability.
Please reach out to your local Eastbourne u3a group for more information or email email@u3aeastbourne.org
Local volunteering options
Most u3as are entirely run by volunteers, so there are plenty of ways to pitch in:
Join the Committee: Help with decision-making, planning events, or managing finances.
Lead or Coordinate an Interest Group: If you have a passion—be it board games, creative writing, local history, or anything that excites you—you could start or support a group.
Support Events: Assist with setting up meetings, welcoming new members, or organizing outings.
Offer a Skill: Whether it’s tech support, publicity, or admin help, your talents are likely needed.
National-level volunteering
If you're keen to go beyond your local group, u3a offers national volunteer roles:
Subject Advisers and Workshop Trainers
Beacon Support (for their admin system)
Podcast Reporters for u3a Radio
Governance or Finance Committee Members
You can explore these roles on the U3A volunteering page or email info@u3a.org.uk for details.
Tips to Get Started
You must be a u3a member to volunteer.
Each u3a is independently run, so start by joining your local branch—such as one of the groups in Eastbourne u3a if you live locally.
Make a personal approach—chat with group leaders or committee members.
Attend a new member social or induction session if available.
Offer to shadow or assist someone already in a role.
Suggest a new group idea if you spot a gap—Eastbourne U3A might love a fresh board game circle!
