What Are Special Interest Groups?
u3a special interest groups are the beating heart of the organization—they’re where the real magic happens.
These are member-led groups focused on shared passions, hobbies, or subjects. Whether you're into Scrabble, creative writing, languages, walking, or wine appreciation, there's likely a group for you—or you can start one!
Run by members, for members: No formal teachers—just people sharing knowledge and enthusiasm.
Diverse topics: From archaeology to ukulele, wine appreciation to walking holidays, there's something for every curiosity.
Flexible formats: Groups meet in person, in homes or community venues, and increasingly online through platforms like Interest Groups Online , which lets you join from home — ideal for flexibility and variety
Examples of Group Themes
Here’s a taste of what you might find:
Creative: Art appreciation, photography, creative writing, flower arranging
Intellectual: Philosophy, psychology, science discussions, history
Social: Supper clubs, wine tasting, quiz nights, board games
Active: Walking groups, Tai Chi, petanque, snooker
Languages: French, German, Spanish conversation and improvement groups
How to Join or Start One
You must be a u3a member to participate.
Most interest groups welcome newcomers and allow trial sessions before committing.
Contact the Group Leader through the link on the u3a website.
If a group doesn’t exist yet, members are encouraged to start one—just grab a couple of interested folks and propose it to your local committee.
The committee will let the members know about your new group.
